After the decision was made to honour this exceptional work with the Alchemist Pen, Montegrappa was deeply touched upon hearing from one whom loves the art of writing. She voiced with uncanny precision the feelings of Montegrappa that, with the Alchemist pen, its owners can look forward to the experience of writing with an instrument whose symbolic voice encourages following one’s dreams. Paulo Coelho's inspirational novel reminds us to search our hearts to find our personal treasure. The Alchemist pen has been conceived to relay a similar message as its ink flows onto the blank page.

Such is the impact of The Alchemist, a novel that touches the heart and the soul. To embody its spirit in a pen, the artisans of Montegrappa have fashioned a form that encompasses the myriad symbols embedded in the story. Using the lost wax technique of casting, the pen is decorated with representations of the Sun and the Moon on the cap, the band onto which Sun and Moon are attached incorporating a rotating mechanism that gives the same tactile sensation as the winding and time-setting of a mechanical watch.

Physically, the Alchemist Pen communicates the true experience of the practice through actual pieces of the seven metals of alchemy incorporated in the body; quicksilver is represented by its chemical sign. The pen’s pocket clip opens as does a cartographer’s drawing compass. Like the book it represents, The Alchemist Pen operates on many levels, and its owners will continue to discover its many details in subsequent studies.

The Alchemist Pen will be issued in an edition of 1987 fountain pens and roller balls in total, in honour of the year that it was published. The series will consist of 71 in solid gold (38 fountain pens and 33 roller balls), for the 71 languages into which it has been translated. 900 pens will be offered in resin and sterling silver (450 fountain pens and 450 roller balls) to represent the number of copies in the first edition’s print run. A further 1000 pens will be produced entirely in sterling silver with accents in translucent enamel. There will be four colours of enamel, representing the four elements: air, fire, earth and water. Only 125 fountain pens and 125 roller balls will be made in each colour. Lastly, 16 pens (8 fountain pens and 8 roller balls) will be produced in gold with diamond enhancements, these precious gems symbolising the riches that feature prominently in the saga.
